Holy Spirit: Leading Christians Day by Day

“But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
— John 14:26

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law.”
— Galatians 5:22-23

People often refer to the Holy Spirit as a gentleman who respects order. Sometimes when people do that, they decide for themselves how He should show up in their lives. What is order and how does the Holy Spirit define it?

I prefer to leave the door open to the manner in which He prefers to be in our midst. At times, the Holy Spirit may arrive in peculiar, astonishing ways that rattle our sensibilities and make us wonder whether it’s really Him.

Too often, I pray to God or Jesus, but I neglect to pray to the Holy Spirit. It’s something I really need to work on as I make my way through life.

I need the Holy Spirit to discern what’s happening in my life at home, work and the many other places I interact with people I love or barely know. Some new and established relationships are tough with a mix of pride, rage, hard hearts, bitterness, fear and misunderstandings. Too often, I try to navigate all of that and more without asking the Holy Spirit to help me size up the situation or use the right words at the proper time.

The song, “Holy Spirit,” reminds me to invite His presence. Here is the video:

The following views may reaffirm your commitment to acknowledge and praise the Holy Spirit:

“God…demands personal surrender, commitment, and sold-out service in prayer and public witness to His glory! When people dare to surrender to the Holy Spirit of God and then live lives of continuous consecrated prayer, they will display an infectious joy that will draw the lost to them again and again in divine appointments of destiny.”
— Jim W. Goll, The Lost Art of Intercession (Shippensburg, PA: Destiny Image Publishers, 1997) p. 146.

“He is God, the Holy Spirit. God the Spirit desires to come and rest powerfully on you, dwell in you, heal you and transform you, so you can see everything through different eyes and from a different perspective. He is for everyone, and He is for you personally.”
— John Arnott, The Father’s Blessing (Lake Mary, FL: Creation House, 1995), p. 32.

“The Holy Spirit is on earth gathering up a bride for the Lord Jesus Christ. When the Holy Spirit comes into your life, do you know what will happen? You will look more like Jesus. You will remind Him of the kind of person Jesus is, full of the fruit of the Spirit — love, peace, gentleness, meekness and self-control.”
— John Arnott, The Father’s Blessing, p. 38.

“The Holy Spirit will help you make the right decisions and get your attention when you make lousy choices.”
— Author Unknown

“Wherever the Holy Spirit dwells, His presence creates a hunger for holiness. His office is to magnify Christ, and it is He who gives the believer a desire to be like Christ. The natural man has no such passion. But in the Christian, the Spirit of God begins to carry out the will of God to make the child of God like the son of God (Romans 8:29). And He who began this good work in the life of the believer ‘will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:6).’ ”
— Donald S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life (Colorado Springs, CO: NavPress, 1991) p. 237.

Rick Duncan, founding pastor and pastor of Missional Living and Leadership Development, Cuyahoga Valley Church:

“You’re not Spirit filled when love, joy and peace don’t come out of your life.”

“The Holy Spirit’s influence in our lives comes and goes as we resist Him and drive Him away.”
